WILDLIFE

Artist Statement
Regarding bird photography, I am fortunate to have many local sites available to photograph such a variety of birds: great blue herons, yellow-crowned night herons, black-crowned night herons, spoonbills, great egrets, snowy egrets, sandhill cranes, limpkins, kingfishers, warblers, songbirds and so many more. In addition to the many regional wetlands, it has been a privilege to merely walk outside my door and capture various poses, hear amazing songs/calls, and watch curious instinctive behavior. My goal is to share the peace and tranquility of this natural environment and offer the viewer glimpses into the habits of these wonderfully intelligent and instinctive animals. I want my photographs to convey a moment and/or a behavior in time, flight, a look, a gesture or a bonding moment.
Many of these ideals apply to nature photography as well. Is serenity being expressed? Is there a moment of calm or a description of place? Does the viewer understand a message or simply wish they were there? The Japanese aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi (beauty in imperfection and impermanence) and seijaku (tranquility or energized calm) always seem to be my guiding force in framing these photos. Beauty can be found in so many unique and unusual places, if we only take the time to pause and observe; a windblown native purple grass, patterns in the water, or the growth expression of a 100-year-old tree.
Always, the motivation in my photography is to keep learning, to refine the technique, the vision; to always appreciate new suggestions and to continue the ongoing adventure.
Biography
Debora Kerr has had a lifelong interest in photography which has always been rooted in a love for art, nature and the environment. Her first professional experience involved working with film and a 6×7 format camera to photograph interior designs in Palm Beach County. Ms. Kerr also taught photography at Palm Beach State College and did freelance work in real estate and newspaper assignments. A career path in college led to two degrees in Art History and a master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology. Her archaeology field work and photo documentation were conducted in Central America, specifically Guatemala, with a focus on various Cotzumalguapa Stelae and an interpretation of botanical imagery around a posed central figure.
After obtaining her MA degree, Debora was drawn to a career in nonprofit management and maintained an extensive background in funding research, resource development and grant management in the nonprofit sector. In creating grant partnerships, she had the opportunity to work with representatives of community-based organizations, universities, county governments, state and federal agencies, and local and national foundations. With a proven track record in funding awards, Ms. Kerr’s activities in public health, biotechnology, environmental health and workforce sectors resulted in financial assistance and operational support to many local, state and federal programs.
Debora now has primary focus on her love of wildlife/nature photography and has photographed various bird species and nature in different locations that include her native Florida, US Southwest, Central America, European countries and a recent trip to Iceland. Ms. Kerr is a member of Everglades Audubon and Martin County Audubon and is always in search of new venues to enjoy encountering a new birding location or nature site, a method of improving photographic outcomes, or meeting like-minded adventurers.
